Sustainable Travel Revisited – A Lifestyle and Geographical Perspective

This keynote (see below) is intended for a broad audience from city and regional planning, transport planning, environmental planning, geography, and economics. I will explore key questions and challenges related to sustainable travel, drawing on evidence from England and the wider UK. The focus will be on:

the long-term impacts of land-use change and lifestyle-related influences on travel behaviour, and

the uneven potential and distribution of costs and benefits of transport decarbonisation

The presentation challenges the prevailing emphasis on physical infrastructure as the primary pathway to decarbonisation. Instead, it argues that a deeper understanding of nuanced travel behaviour—viewed through the lens of lifestyle choices—can inform the development of innovative policy instruments to promote transport sustainability and resilience.

Dr. Li Wan

Dr Li Wan is an Associate Professor in urban planning and development, Director for the MPhil in Planning, Growth and Regeneration, and Fellow of Gonville and Caius College. He is interested in spatial economic modelling of urban land use and transport systems. His recent research interests include strategic planning at the city/regional level, impact study of flexible working, micromobility and electric vehicles.
