Sean C. Lewis is a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam, dually affiliated with the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) and the Amsterdam Centre for Urban History (ACUH). Under the supervision of Professor Tuna Tasan-Kok (AISSR) and Professor Tim Verlaan (ACUH), Sean’s doctoral project explores the post-war rise in institutional financialization and the impacts this has had on the physical campus environment and university property development, over time. Titled The University as the New Asset Class, Sean’s research is focused on the intersection of real estate, urban history and public finance.

Research statement

The significant socio-economic shifts of the mid- to late-twentieth century have profoundly influenced the configuration and specialization of the institutional physical environment, effectively altering the traditional university footprint and realigning academia with the free market
