What we’re about and what we aim to do.
Purpose & values
We promote knowledge and practices aimed at fostering a socially just and ecologically sustainable cities. Our core purpose is to produce knowledge and educate new generations of planners to help create and maintain a just city through planning mechanisms that are inclusive and fair. As a research group, we reject collaboration with organisations that perpetuate social injustices, environmental degradation, or exploitation of human-nature relationships.
Promoting transformative practices
We facilitate transformative governance and planning practices for more inclusive and equitable cities and environments by enhancing visibility, reflexivity, and connectivity within these practices.
Challenging dominant practices
We challenge prevailing urban policy practices that hinder the advancement of pluralism and equality in cities and environments. We advocate for alternative governance and planning approaches that prioritise fairness and diversity.
Co-production of knowledge
We engage with diverse societal actors to co-produce knowledge, fostering collaboration and dialogue to address pressing urban and environmental challenges.

Role as critical friends
We serve as critical friends to cities and communities, advocating for new norms and principles of planning that promote courage, curiosity, and innovation. Our role includes developing new theories and concepts to better understand the complexities of urban reality and reveal underlying power dynamics in planning processes.
