Ways of Water

This research explores the socio-ecological-technological dynamics that reinforce the energy lock-in of the Port of Amsterdam and identifies leverage points for sustainable transition.

Combining the Social-Ecological-Technological Systems (SETS) and Urban Metabolism (UM) frameworks, the project examines how infrastructure, governance, and material flows interact to shape the port’s development.

Focusing on the ongoing shift toward green hydrogen, it addresses how historical decisions and multi-actor governance networks produce institutional inertia and spatial conflicts. Using a pragmatist approach, the research integrates historical analysis, participatory system mapping, and co-creation sessions with stakeholders. The case of Amsterdam is especially relevant due to its unique port-city interface, the strategic role of the North Sea Canal, and growing urbanization pressures.

This project contributes to urban sustainability studies by uncovering power relations embedded in infrastructure and proposing governance strategies that support more adaptive and inclusive port-city futures.
