Social impact in urban development: urban development projects often prioritize physical and environmental goals, such as sustainability and accessibility, but fall short in effectively incorporating social impact as a core aspect of planning and implementation. This research seeks to bridge the gap between the physical and social domains in urban planning, suggesting that a balanced approach can lead to more inclusive, sustainable, and equitable urban spaces. By linking social impact to urban development: investigating contracts, public-private partnership in spatial planning, applied in two case studies in Amsterdam.
This research argues that for social impact to be truly integrated into urban development, there must be a deliberate focus on understanding and applying social impact norms within procurement processes and development agreements. Not only for improvement of the Public Private Partnerships, but also because of the increasing role of the private sector in urban planning.
Research question
How can institutional and contractual mechanisms, such as procurement processes and public-private partnership (PPP) agreements, be effectively leveraged to embed social impact in urban development projects, and what limitations do public sector institutions face in this process?
